Hi, I’m Pixie from Pixie’s Pet Corner aka the luckiest black
cat you know who wants to spread awareness about the plight of other animals suffering
in the world particularly the ongoing predicament of the black cat. Even though
my adoption as a black cat went through amazingly, I can tell you that that is
not always the case. Did you know that black cats are the least likely to be
adopted and find a permanent fur-ever home? According to this article
by nationaltoday.com,
a “study found that out of the cats left behind at animal shelters, black cats
were sadly the most common at 30%.” Apparently since the rate of return of us black
cats to the shelters are so much higher than the rate of adoption that it leads
to complicating an already bad situation. So not only are black cats overlooked
for adoption, when they are finally adopted, they are returned at a higher
rate!
When I was at the shelter, it felt like fur-ever even though
it was only a few months before me, and my sister Leah were adopted. I would
dread to think that we could have been in a cage forever. (Editor’s
Note from Pixie’s Human Mom: What Pixie doesn’t realize is that in some
shelters, cats can’t stay there forever. If no one adopts them or fosters, they
end up euthanized and cross the rainbow bridge. Pixie doesn’t know what that
means and since I tend to these blog postings on her behalf she isn’t going to.
She is not allowed to go online unless supervised. Thanks for your patience and
understanding on this matter.)
Actually, we were very fortunate to be adopted when we were
and also for our family to be so kind and patient to give us a chance despite
our furry issues and unique personalities that often clashed with each other at
times. People seem to think that cats should act how they envision and imagine
that they should behave instead of facing reality and accepting us for how we
truly behave. And that behavior can be different from individual cat to cat
even if there are certain personality traits that are generally attached to a
particular breed. Unfortunately, when this happens, people tend to miss out on
what really matters and the emotional growth that can take place not only for
the cat but for the human adopted by the cat. That is why it is my intent to
spread awareness about black cats and dispel the prevalent attitudes and myths
that give us such a bad name and reputation such as:
BLACK CAT MYTHS |
Awful
Superstitions/Bad Luck |
Don’t Photograph Well/Less Photogenic |
Seemingly
unfriendly/Cold and Reserved |
Scary/aggressive |
Less Attractive |
Evil |
Nothing could be further from the truth about me or other
black cats. In addition to educating others about us, there are other animals
too that need a voice on their behalf. Black dogs get the same treatment as us
black cats! And let’s not bring up the plight of the poor pit bulls and how
they are viewed by society as well!
It is now time to move forward and spread awareness and
kindness towards all of our furry friends. Look out for my latest blog articles
where I take on these topics and more!
